Habitat for Humanity is an international Christian aid organisation with projects and offices in more than 70 countries. The vision of Habitat for Humanity is a world in which every person has a protective and dignified home.

Giving people a home

Due to the far-reaching effects that a home has on its inhabitants, Habitat for Humanity implements aid projects that are thematically related to the home. These include house construction, retrofitting and conversion work, infrastructure measures & water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), training & counselling as well as disaster relief and preparedness.

Habitat for Humanity Germany is part of the global Habitat for Humanity network and implements international as well as local aid projects. The German office is located in Cologne.

Habitat for Humanity in disaster risk reduction and prevention

In disaster relief, Habitat for Humanity is primarily involved in the shelter sector. This means that aid workers distribute materials for the rapid repair and construction of temporary housing. The construction of new, disaster-proof houses then begins as quickly as possible.

Sustainable disaster prevention projects are also being implemented. The retrofitting of houses and training courses on earthquake-proof construction prevent even greater suffering.

Everyone has the right to a roof over their head: why is a home so important?

One in three people worldwide is affected by inadequate housing (source: UN-Habitat). This means that at least 2.8 billion people, particularly in countries of the Global South, do not have access to at least one of seven dimensions of adequate housing.

Since its founding in the USA in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has supported more than 62 million people on all five continents on their path to greater strength, stability and self-determination based on a protective home.
